NAME: Dosei
CANON: Original Character
CANON POINT: Around 2020, when he's still being used.
BACKGROUND: Boredom is a plague. It can affect everyone from the smallest child to the oldest creature, monotony providing little stimulation for one’s life. There’s only so much one can take of doing the same thing over with little rest or deviation. Even some animals can dare to change their approach if need be, if one way doesn’t suit them enough. Of course, all mortal creatures have only limited time.

When one is ageless, then the monotony becomes too much to bear.

Tens, thousands, millions of years have Gods existed, beyond the plane of existence only regular people can dream of. They watch from warped thrones, inhuman forms of claws, gaping holes, blank faces. Both the things of majesty and nightmares, they have their individual duties and have tended to them for millenia without complaint, for this is what they were given life. There are no questions, no complaints, no deviations from the norm.

Of course, that is not to say even beings above the mortal plain would not find themselves tired of the mundane. Attending to the same thing, relaying the same notices over and over–it takes a toll on the most weathered of minds.

One of these beings became the first to have enough. They had never been fond of humanity as a whole, and found delivering divine thoughts through their sleep a bothersome task. It’s with this in mind that they decided to take things into their own hands, and craft life to lessen the burden upon their shoulders.

A doll, crafted from the being’s own flesh, hair, and blood, were the result. By breathing a minuscule part of their soul into the item, it was given a human form and an undeveloped soul, a puppet created to follow the God’s will. It would split the duty in half, perhaps with less speed, but more efficiency. In the form of a human, the servant was sent off to take care of his master’s work, allowing the Messenger to sit back and watch his creation. At first, it was clumsy, unused to the body it was suddenly given, and had difficulties remembering what it was told, but as time passed, it became more physically capable of what was expected of it.

The boy, named Dosei, started out obedient. With little outside influences, he simply did as he was told and did his job, never staying long enough to bother with the humans he was delivering to. It’s not until the dreaded curiosity came that he began to linger a few minutes behind, pausing to observe and watch those he’s always been told were inferior, ugly. He witnessed their behavior and committed it to memory, being an impressionable thing, and over the centuries slowly began to become influenced by the very thing his master seemed to detest.

However, instead of developing in a friendlier way, his personality and mannerisms took a turn for the unpleasant. He became a bit more closed off, more rude, his mouth eventually forming the insults he’d heard so many times. It gradually got worse, until he was like a teenager in the throes of rebellion.

Hearing and witnessing such disrespect time and time again only boiled the Messenger’s blood, until they eventually decided that if you want to cure a sickness, you must first rip it out by the roots.

As punishment, they ripped the vocal chords straight from their servant’s throat, and was not satisfied until they had handstitched the boy’s mouth closed. Unable to spew his learned insults and responses, they thought it would serve as a valuable lesson to become as he once was.

Unfortunately, the damage was done.

He was already too shaped by humanity, unable and unwilling to simply sit pretty and do as he was told. Too long had they waited to try and fix what was done, and Dosei was deemed a failure in the eyes of his creator and their brethren. It would have been easy to rip the soul out of him and revert him to the mere marionette he truly was, lifeless and cold, but it was frowned upon to end a existence you had created.

It’s only because of this that he was spared, his orders more harsh and punishments more cruel. As immortal as any other creature beyond the realm of mortality, his duties have extended to present times, where the influences simply seem to grow worse and worse.

SUITABILITY: Dosei is an individual who has not had much interaction with people. All his knowledge of humanity, as well as most basic things comes from a distance, and he has never really known kindness or love or anything really other than orders and animosity. While admittedly unpleasant to be around due to his lack of social skills and the obvious pleasure he gets out of making people miserable (likely to take his own misery out on them), he is somebody who doesn't know how bonds work and would definitely benefit from the chance to make them.

In a setting like this, where he doesn't have his abilities or have to deal with the ever-looming threat of his creator's displeasure in the back of his mind, it would be ideal for him to finally mature a bit emotionally as well as experience everything he hasn't. Being as he is, he has a childish personality and mentality that could very well grow from exposure to other people as well as the consequences the game can offer, due to his inherent ability to absorb influence like a sponge. He'll likely never stop being a pain in the ass, but it would be good to see how he can adapt to dealing with people and pick up on things like social cues and other people's feelings.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character finds an injured okami deep in the woods. Its leg is broken, trapped under a fallen tree, but it’s clearly in good health otherwise. They know this type of youkai is able to discern the morality of their past actions, and can turn hostile to them based off that judgment. What do they do?

Dosei, being who he is, is not one who usually deigns to offer a helping hand to people. If anything, he prefers to do the exact opposite. People being injured or in trouble is none of his business, and as of now he sees no reason why he should help somebody or anybody he doesn't know unless there is something in it for him. While his curiosity may urge him to poke a sleeping bear, as the saying goes, he won't go out of his way to attempt to move the tree or go for help. There's a chance he might get attacked due to his tendency to do whatever he pleases without care for others, sometimes purposefully malicious, but it wouldn't matter in the end as he wouldn't bother.

This may get him on their bad side, perhaps more than just the singular creature's bad side, but regrettably he isn't quite intelligent enough to realize this. He doesn't feel it's his responsibility to waste his time on somebody he doesn't know, and wouldn't really register the consequences his actions would have in the long run, likely creating more trouble for himself when it comes down to it.

Your character's worst enemy asks to meet alone by moonlight in a remote location, to discuss temporarily banding together against a larger threat. How do they respond to the invitation?

For the sake of this question, we can act like he has some other worst enemy, and get to the point that he would absolutely say no. Perhaps even aggressively. If he came to hate someone this badly, he would not even think about accepting, even for a moment, seeing as how his negative emotions are the ones he's used to experiencing the most. His own feelings would come first, and if he considered this person his worst enemy, he'd want to make them miserable rather than offer them any form of help against anything.

In typical form, Dosei would make it clear they can handle whatever problem it is on their own, regardless of what happens. Perhaps he could be inevitably convinced by someone who he has more positive feelings towards, but being as stubborn as he is, helping someone he dislikes immensely would be the last thing on his mind. If he did have to do something for the benefit of other people, it'd be with someone he can tolerate, and he'd likely whine in some form the whole time.

Your character has the option to lead a rampaging oni away from path where it would find and attack a lone, inhabited farmhouse. However, the only road they can distract it down leads to the city, where it will inevitably do more damage. What do they choose to do?

It would likely take him a moment to put it together, but when he does, the option would be clear. As we've discussed, he has no clear desire to really help anyone or prevent disaster from happening; if anything, he'd probably lead it towards the city just so he can see the chaos that would happen from it running loose. He feels a disconnect from the lives of regular people, so he'd feel nothing except a sick sense of enjoyment from watching the pointless destruction the creature would bring during it's rampage. He might even get himself injured by getting a little too close to the fray, although he doesn't really feel pain as strongly as everyone else, but that's inconsequential.

The only reason the person in the farmhouse ends up being spared their fate is because the amount of destruction in the city is far greater, thus it'd be far more entertaining to watch. The morbid, childish sense of curiosity he has is what mainly drives him, after all.

A shrine of a powerful god offers your character a unique boon crafted to overcome the biggest challenge they’re currently facing. In return, it only asks to be able to possess your character for a 24 hour span of its choosing, which they will not necessarily get warning for. How do they feel about the exchange, and more importantly, do they accept it?

A difficult question, if only because Dosei is a person who highly values his own freedom, or at least the illusion of it. The thing he desires most is complete autonomy, which conflicts with the idea of letting something else borrow his body for whatever purposes they may desire. It's not as if he's really considered injury to be of consequence, so it's moreso the uncomfortable feeling of what he would have to experience during that 24 hour period. Would he be conscious, watching everything from the backseat? Would he be unconscious, only awakening after it's all over? Or something else, some sort of terrifying limbo he wouldn't be able to describe? This is one of the few things he'd actually think deeply about it, and he likely wouldn't enjoy any of his options.

Due to the threats his own creator has given him, about dismantling him and removing what fragile imitation of life he has regardless of how it's frowned upon, the idea of not having control of himself is a terrifying concept he wouldn't even enjoy considering.

While it would depend on the challenge itself, it's more likely he'd decline, out of the sheer fear of whatever he'd have to feel while his body is being driven by someone else. If it were truly something bad, that would permanently endanger him or someone else he's come to actually care about, there is the possibility he would choke it down for the sake of fixing it, but otherwise he'd take whatever came as is. Some things aren't worth the panic they incite

YOUKAI: Tsuchigumo
INVENTORY: A dollar-store notepad (stolen), a busted up pen (stolen), and a tempered glass bottle of glowing 'light'. They are things he can create with his abilities, but seeing as how he has none, he'll just keep the one he has as a form of security.
